Exclusive: Life On The Sideline EP announcement, music video premiere

Since releasing Honesty Is A Dying Breed two years ago, Life On The Sideline has remained active on the road and is now ready to unveil its upcoming EP, Never Settle. To kick things off, we're premiering the music video for the band's new single, "Echo", which tells the sad story of a young girl reminiscing times spent with her deceased partner. While not a pop punk song per se, it's as catchy as one with an infectious chorus that you'll inevitably get stuck in your head. The band's sound could be compared to that of Transit's and The Early November's. Fans can pre-order the EP on iTunes and CD here, before it's released on June 7th. […]

Review: Thieves - "No Motive"

Release Info Thieves - No Motive
Release Date: November 25th, 2016
Record Label: Revival Recordings
Pre-order: CD, merch

Thieves has been putting me in a better mood. No Motive is a stand out record amongst the crowd of recent releases. Their aggressive pop punk style isn't truly unique. You've heard a lot of what they do before. It's how well they do everything that sets them apart. The vocals are superb and have true heart and feeling behind the words. The drumming throughout the record is outstanding, each song bringing something new and unique to the track, never repeated and always interesting. Every song changes up the pacing of the record generally for the best. Thieves is a very aggressive band and it shows in many of their songs, but they chose their moments to tone it back providing a stark contrast to breathe. This makes for moments that are far more grandiose than they should have been.

I'm especially a fan of much of the guitar work on the record. A lot of the work done here opens the door for some of the best moments of the record. Wistful riffs such as the moment "Generation Why" breaks into double time and the intro of "Decoder" remind you this band is pop punk at the core, but songs like "5748" and "Fade" show how the guitar can be used to create more of an atmosphere for a song rather than be a featured riff or chord machine. Then there's the perfectly placed and executed, pure glory Rock N' Roll guitar solo in "Stone Eyelids." Not too many times do I hit repeat for a 12-second guitar solo.

There are moments where things just didn't work, or things feel a bit too slow, muddy, or rushed. These are few are far between. For the most part, "No Motive" is an album filled with songs where each song is filled with great performances and interesting sections that make you go back to listen to them again. It's like a good sundae, where together, it's excellent, but everything is so delicious you'd be okay eating just one of the ingredients by itself. Thieves have done a stellar job with "No Motive" and a greatly look forward to hearing more from these gents in the future.

Tracklist:
1. Drag Me Into Light
2. 5748
3. Stone Eyelids
4. Fade
5. Pulse
6. Fair Weather
7. Decoder
8. Stay
9. Generation Why
10. No Motive

RIYL: Such Gold, Knuckle Puck, energetic live shows

Review: Charlie Siren - "Mood Swings"

Release Info Charlie Siren - Mood Swings
Release Date: April 22, 2016
Record Label: Loud Broke & Dumb Records
Buy: CD, Vinyl, Merch

Maybe it's because I've been fans of them for so long now or because "The Fabulist" is easily top 5 best songs of the year so far, but I'm completely enamored with the newest release from Minnesota's Charlie Siren. There's been a decent gap since the band's last release and in that time we've seen a little bit of shuffling around, but Mood Swings is a massive success on every level from the boys from Minnesota. Whether is the sing-a-long choruses, the harmonized guitar riffs that shred through nearly every song, the whimsical nostalgic bridges and outros, the insane doubletime, or some of the truly finest drumming the Midwest has produced with a smattering of your daily dose of double base, this album is ripe for pop punk fans to enjoy.

Review: Like Pacific - "Distant Like You Asked"

Release Info Like Pacific - Distant Like You Asked
Release Date: February 19th, 2016
Record Label: Pure Noise Records
Buy: CD, Vinyl, Merch

Distant Like You Asked, the newest from Canada’s Like Pacific, is a wonderful blend of hardcore and emo that equally amps you up and brings you down. Musically, there is a plethora of superb guitar work throughout the record which prods out distinct feelings reminiscent of early 00s emo and pop punk. The layered chords and atypical harmonies coexisting with standard chord progressions sound familiar, yet new, and the songs benefit greatly from the strong nostalgia they well up. Lyrically, this album is on point, while occasionally faltering, the words and generally meaningful and impressively done.

Review: Pentimento - "I, No Longer"

Release Info Pentimento - I, No Longer
Release Date: October 23rd, 2015
Record Label: Bad Timing Records
Buy: CD, Vinyl, Merch

There’s nothing I inherently dislike about Pentimento’s newest full length I, No Longer. Most of it can be summed up by saying nothing else but “It’s beautiful,” but I’ll try my best to quantify those moments into reasons for why you should pick up this release and give it a shot.

Review: Dead Ahead - Self-Titled EP

Release InfoDead Ahead - Self-Titled EP
Release Date: October 9th, 2015
Record Label: Panic State Records
Pre-order: Digital, vinyl

The anticipation of an initial release from a deemed supergroup can illicit a mixed consensus and unwarranted acclaim. Newburgh, NY’s Dead Ahead (featuring members of With The Punches, Autopilot Off and Measured In Grey) have subverted the hype machine by navigating away from the gaze of their previous outfits' avid followers while recording an EP from under everyone’s noses. This has culminated in a four-song EP that has become an immediate planting into the soil-bed of the independent punk scene's attention.

Review: Household - "Time Spent"

Release InfoHousehold - Time Spent
Release Date: September 25th, 2015
Record Label: Blood & Ink Records
Pre-order: CD, vinyl

Minnesota's young hopefuls, Household, have enthralled the masses of hardcore enthusiasts within their local scene since the 2014 debut effort, With Or Without, burrowed itself into canonical underground hardcore. Since then, the abrasive veneer of the band has undergone subtle changes musically while still holding onto the earlier seeds of their sound. On the new LP, Time Spent, Household have bridged nuances of various strands of hardcore in different ways.

Review: Being As An Ocean - Self-Titled

Release Info Being As An Ocean - Self-Titled
Release Date: June 30th, 2015
Record Label: InVogue Records
Pre-order: CD, vinyl

The straightforward answer for fans of Being As An Ocean is that, yes, if you love How We Both Wondrously Perish, you will absolutely be thrilled with their new self-titled full-length. The passion and power behind every note in every song is palpable expressing a range of emotion from anguish to hope over the expanse of the record. Instrumentation is consistently interesting and exciting especially when the vocals cease to be the driving force of the song.

Review: Sleep On It - "Safe Again" EP

Release Info Sleep On It - Safe Again EP
Release Date: June 19th, 2015
Record Label: Unsigned
Buy: Digital

Listening to Sleep On It’s new EP, Safe Again, gives the same feelings of when I first heard similar Chicago area bands Real Friends and Knuckle Puck’s EPs. And like those bands, Sleep On It is on the right track to become the next alternative/pop-punk band to explode on the scene. The band definitely subscribes to The Starting Line school of writing music, as frequently little melodies, harmonies, guitar work, and rhythm guitar work triggers memories of early 00s Drive-Thru Records bands.

Review: Housing - "Empathy" EP

Release Info Housing - Empathy EP
Release Date: May 19th, 2015
Record Label: Mutant League Records
Pre-order: Vinyl, Merch

With their debut EP, Empathy, on Mutant League records, Housing delivers five solid tracks that hit just shy of greatness. The band is tight and there is some beautifully executed instrumentation performed throughout these tunes. The drumming really stands out throughout the EP as being excellent at all times, adding greatly, sometimes in very subtle but important ways. Lyrically, the record also stands out as being well above your average local band.

Review: We Are The Union - "Keep It Down" EP

Release Info We Are The Union - Keep It Down EP
Release Date: May 15th, 2015
Record Label: Paper + Plastick Records
Pre-order: CD, vinyl

We Are the Union has always seemed like a perfect blend of the best parts of Less Than Jake and No Use For A Name to me, so when they went on a hiatus from active status back in 2013, a little hole was left that used to be filled by WATU. Thankfully, the hiatus was a short one and the band is releasing a new 6 song EP, Keep It Down.

Review: A Will Away - "Bliss" EP

Release Info A Will Away - Bliss EP
Release Date: March 20th, 2015
Record Label: Quiet Fire Media
Pre-order: N/A

Bliss is being in the state of perfect happiness, and the new EP Bliss from A Will Away gives a feeling of being content knowing nothing really matters. The record is all about finding comfort in this feeling and it’s not subtle about it. From displaying “Finding comfort in the pointlessness of life” on its cover to the repetition of lyrics “It doesn’t matter. It never mattered” through the songs final tune, the album slings this theme around with the subtlety of a sledgehammer.

Review: Hindsights "Cold Walls/Cloudy Eyes"

Release Info Hindsights - Cold Walls/Cloudy Eyes
Release Date: February 23rd, 2015
Record Label: Beach Community
Pre-order: CD, vinyl

With a record title like Cold Walls/Cloudy Eyes, you can already tell you’re going to be in for a grouping of sad tunes from the Berkshire based band Hindsights. You definitely wouldn’t be wrong, but the emotion put into the band’s debut full-length record extends so much further than the basic emotion of sad.

Review: City Lights - "Acoustic EP 2"

Release InfoCity Lights - Acoustic EP 2

Following last year’s announcement of disbanding, Ohio’s City Lights (now only comprising of vocalist Oshie Bichar) has fulfilled early promises of being a sole studio project with the release of a new acoustic EP. Aptly titled Acoustic EP 2, this latest effort again consists of acoustic renditions from a selection of tracks of the preceded full-length release, 2013’s The Way Things Should Be.

Review: Gutterlife - "Don't Sleep" EP

Release InfoGutterlife - Don't Sleep EP
Release Date: February 17th, 2015
Record Label: We Are Triumphant
Pre-order: N/A

Don't Sleep is a short EP from Long Island’s Gutterlife that sounds like it was written from a profoundly dark period in the artist's life. There’s no doubt that the issues covered by the lyrics were crucial when they were first written out and the music that accompanies them channels the raw emotion brought forth from the lyrics quite naturally.

If you’re the kind of person who loves to discover bands before they become popular, you’ve only got a few weeks before Six Time Champion explodes in the pop punk scene. Reason being is their upcoming EP release, Expecting Honesty, set to drop on December 1st, is one of the most entertaining and impressive releases I’ve heard from a local band in some time.
