Anchorless is a four piece Easycore outfit hailing from Santa Fe Springs, California, a state where some of the more popular Pop Punk bands in the scene today originate from. The band is barely on the verge of celebrating its first birthday, forming in late 2011 by ex-members of Tiefighter and Destruction Of A King. Their three-song EP, Bridges Burned, Lessons Learned, will be released via the do-it-yourself approach, paving the way for other up and coming bands to emulate their path to success.
Perhaps Anchorless made a smart move in releasing a short length EP; doing so makes it impossible for the listener to forget how each track sounds and almost forces them to listen to eleven-minute-long record numerous times. Each track puts a spotlight on a particular section of the band, making the EP well-rounded and more intriguing to listen to. Watermark is the opening track to the EP, showcasing the band's strong guitar section and playing with the band's knack for catchy melodies. The rhythm section gets more played up in the second track, Salton Sea; the chorus has a swaying tempo to it while the surrounding verses are laced with a more uppity, fast-paced beat. The closing track, Gray's Papaya, is more involved, both lyrically and musically. The band plays around with time signatures more intricately and chooses to play in a lower and a bit heavier key. Lyrically, the track speaks like a typical break up/burning bridges jam ("You can say what you will/But don't say it never mattered"), essentially referring to the former part of the EP's title.
For a newer band that rose from the remnants of previously failed bands, Anchorless did themselves justice on Bridges Burned, Lessons Learned. Every aspect of the release, from the self-releasing approach to the EP's structure, was done flawlessly and is something the band should be commended for.
